Background of the Study
Nutrition plays a crucial role in cognitive development and performance, particularly in children. Adequate nutrition is essential for the development of the brain, which influences learning abilities, memory, and academic performance. School-aged children are particularly vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies, which can negatively impact their cognitive abilities and academic success. The importance of proper nutrition during childhood cannot be overemphasized, as the nutritional status of children is strongly associated with cognitive functioning and overall well-being (Okafor & Adediran, 2024).

In Sokoto State, located in the northern region of Nigeria, many children face challenges related to malnutrition, including stunting, underweight, and micronutrient deficiencies. The socio-economic status, cultural practices, and food insecurity contribute to the nutritional challenges faced by school children in this region. Research suggests that deficiencies in key nutrients, such as iron, iodine, zinc, and vitamin A, have been linked to poor cognitive outcomes, including reduced attention span, memory difficulties, and decreased academic performance (Aliyu & Mohammed, 2023).

Several studies in Nigeria and other parts of Africa have documented the negative effects of poor nutrition on cognitive abilities among children (Nwankwo et al., 2025). However, there is a limited body of research focused specifically on Sokoto State. The interaction between the local dietary habits, socioeconomic status, and nutritional deficiencies presents a unique opportunity to investigate the impact of nutritional status on cognitive performance in this region. Understanding this relationship is vital for formulating policies aimed at improving the nutritional intake of children and enhancing their academic performance.

This study will focus on the nutritional status of school children in Sokoto State, examining its direct impact on their cognitive functions, including attention, memory, and problem-solving skills. The research aims to explore how malnutrition impedes cognitive development and identify nutritional deficiencies most prevalent in this region, thereby contributing to a more targeted approach to improving children's cognitive development.

Statement of the Problem
Malnutrition among school children is a pressing issue in Sokoto State, with significant implications for their cognitive development and academic performance. The increasing rates of stunting, undernutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies are worrying, as they are known to have detrimental effects on brain development and cognitive function. Despite this knowledge, little research has been conducted in Sokoto State to specifically explore how these nutritional challenges affect children's cognitive abilities in an educational setting.

Furthermore, existing studies that address the broader implications of malnutrition often fail to account for the specific socio-economic and cultural dynamics of the region, which may play a pivotal role in shaping the nutritional status of children. Understanding the local dietary patterns and socio-economic barriers to proper nutrition is crucial in providing a comprehensive analysis of the issue. This gap in the literature presents a significant challenge in formulating targeted interventions to improve the nutritional intake and cognitive performance of school children in Sokoto State.

Thus, this study aims to fill this gap by investigating the direct impact of nutritional deficiencies on cognitive performance among school children in Sokoto State, with a focus on identifying specific dietary factors that contribute to cognitive decline. The findings will provide a foundation for policymakers and educators to implement strategies that improve both the nutritional status and academic performance of school children in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the nutritional status of school children in Sokoto State.
  2. To evaluate the relationship between nutritional status and cognitive performance among school children.
  3. To identify the most prevalent nutritional deficiencies affecting cognitive development in Sokoto State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the nutritional status of school children in Sokoto State?
  2. How does nutritional status influence cognitive performance among school children in Sokoto State?
  3. Which nutritional deficiencies are most prevalent in school children in Sokoto State, and how do they affect cognitive abilities?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant relationship between nutritional status and cognitive performance among school children in Sokoto State.
  2. School children with adequate nutrition perform better in cognitive tests than those with poor nutritional status.
  3. Micronutrient deficiencies, particularly iron and zinc, are significantly associated with reduced cognitive performance among school children in Sokoto State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will be limited to school children aged 6-12 years in Sokoto State. The focus will be on both public and private schools within urban and rural areas to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue. However, the study will not account for other factors influencing cognitive performance, such as family dynamics, psychological factors, and school infrastructure. Additionally, the study will rely on available data, which may limit the accuracy of nutritional assessments due to challenges in measuring actual dietary intake.

Definitions of Terms

  • Nutritional Status: The condition of an individual’s health as determined by the intake of essential nutrients such as proteins, vitamins, and minerals.
  • Cognitive Performance: The ability to perform tasks that require mental effort, such as memory, attention, problem-solving, and decision-making.
  • Malnutrition: A condition resulting from inadequate or imbalanced intake of nutrients, leading to negative health outcomes.
  • Micronutrient Deficiencies: A lack of essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin A, iron, and zinc, which are crucial for proper growth and cognitive function.
